Food for Thought: Perfection

I stumbled upon this quote by Voltaire and it really resonated with me: “Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good” .

So often our hunger for perfection makes us devalue what is right in front of us. It’s an easy trap to fall into since it takes barely any effort at all to compare ourselves to others. I’m guilty of this. All. The. Time.

In those moments of comparison or self-doubt, why not try switching it up and practice a little bit of old fashion gratitude? It’s pretty easy, just list out a minimum of five things that are going OK in your life. Don’t know where to start? Here’s my go-to list:

  • I live in the best city in the world: Toronto
  • My family is healthy and happy
  • I have a loving husband who is also my best friend
  • Our dog, Julius had a “no bad news” vet appointment
  • My home ❤

Be grateful for what you have because chances are what you have and who you are is great and that’s enough.

What are you grateful for? How do you overcome self-doubt? I’d love to hear! Share in the comments.

This is an uplifting post, Lauren! Gratitude is in short supply everywhere. We all need reminders to be thankful for what we have and what we can do. 🙂

Please give little Julius a scratch behind the ears for me. 🙂

    1. Thank you, Lavinia 🙂 Sometimes “counting our blessings” is easier said than done, but I thought a little reminder may serve helpful. Glad you liked it! And i’ll be sure to pass on the scratches to Julius. He loves them so! Hope you’re well!

All is well here, but summer gets so busy I feel like the walls are closing in sometimes. 🙂 I have to keep remembering to feel blessed with all we have here.

  5. You (and Voltaire) are so right. Perfection just ties us up into knots of fear, doubt, and frustration. Grateful – I live in the most beautiful county/area I’ve ever lived in; it’s safe; I’m safe; I have been blessed with many talents and gifts; among them people in my life who genuinely care. Thanks for the reminder. 🙂

Thank you for this timely reminder, Lauren. I do tend to forget to be grateful and thankful, especially when things get stressful. 🙂

  8. Certainly sounds like good advice to me. I used to be much more of a perfectionist. Fortunately, age has mellowed me out. –Curt

  9. Yes, it’s so easy to get caught up in the pursuit of perfection and forget those ‘perfect’ things we already have.
